Corporate Insight - Session by Mr. R.R. Deshpande
Session on “Leadership, Business Challenges, COVID Impact, New Normal and the Upcoming Scenario” by Mr. R. R. Deshpande.
Monday, 17th August 2020: Kirloskar Institute of Management invited Mr. R. R. Deshpande, former MD & CEO, Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited, to share his experience under the “KIM-Talk” series.
Mr. Deshpande has a vast and rich experience of leading an engineering organization, and has been one of the key persons in the success story of Kirloskar Oil Engines Ltd. He has pioneered many best practices at KOEL, which have gained a lot of recognition and earned many awards. Many of his initiatives have become benchmarking practices among industries operating in the same as well other domains, wherever applicable.
This session was organized to understand the challenges put forth to the leadership during this pandemic (COVID-19), and the way that they were dealt with. Lockdown, dropping business, fearful surroundings, division of zones (Red-Green-Orange), logistics issues, government directives - these were the many dimensions which impacted business verticals, and really tested the sustainability of the organizations. Who better to tell us how to deal with all these problems than Mr. Deshpande, with his many years of accumulated knowledge & experience.
During the interaction, he explained all the above points with appropriate illustrations. He shared his experience of dealing with various stakeholders, such as Dealers, Suppliers, Customers, and most importantly - Employees. He mentioned that it was very important to keep the employees motivated, and also to protect them from pay loss, layoffs, and more such negative developments which were happening in industries across the country. KOEL was able to protect its employees and manage to get back to profitability in this challenging time.
He narrated the challenges in logistics, client meetings, technology support, work from home, tension with China, and much more in the business operations, and how these challenges were dealt with by the team of KOEL. It was very insightful and eye-opening.
According to him, health, safety and business were the priorities of KOEL. He mentioned about the ways that various organizations were dealing with these situations. Some organizations put the people first, and some the business - KOEL managed both; they won the trust of their employees and thereby managed their business verticals. He also stressed the fact that as this is an unprecedented event, one should not compare the business outcomes of this year with that of the previous year. This year must be treated as a disaster-survival year, and if the organizations are able to protect their people and profitability, it should be considered as a great achievement.
215 Participants including faculty and students attended the session, and it was a great learning experience for all of them.

There is always an advantage in the diversity of thinking as you may not be able to think everything.’’
R. R. Deshpande and Vikas Joshi shared some of their learning experiences with the students. Deshpande said that regardless of whether you are an employee or an entrepreneur, respecting people is the most important thing for success. One should not become self-satisfied or get into the comfort zone even if you achieve some goals. He also stressed that continuous improvement is the necessity of the day.
