KIAMS students participate in Adoption of Social Media in Academia (ASMA) project – rethinking revenue generation by adopting creative measures

Posted on: August 17, 2017

An academic institution handles multiple fronts: admissions, placements, promotion, branding, academics, industry interface, alumni relationship, and campus life. Adoption of Social Media in Academia or ASMA, the brainchild of a digital media marketing company, empowers institutions to manage these multiple and connected facets via social media. Through business immersion programs and live projects, KIAMS supports ASMA – India’s first research-based initiative that brings together social media and the academia.

Let’s hear what Mr. Akshay Phadke, KIAMS student, Revenue Manager for ASMA, and now one of the five students selected for the business immersion program, has to say.

‘ASMA has been a wonderful experience and will always remain an integral part of my learning curve. Not only learned but executed and drove results keeping in view the needs of the overall initiative.’

Managing revenue for ASMA, first and foremost Akshay identified direct and indirect revenue channels for the project. Since the first objective was to make it a self-sustained initiative, he focused on covering costs for research publication, development of ASMA portal, and ASMA Social Media Awards 2017. From the very beginning, he started planning to generate revenue through sponsorship.

‘At ASMA I learnt revenue generation techniques for a project, the difference between product selling and concept selling, improvisation in communication skills (writing and speaking), as well as planning, organizing, and execution of B2B event.’

But Akshay went further and utilized the learning experience to the maximum. He designed and improvised documents like project concept note, sponsorship proposal, advertisement proposal for research report and portal, and revenue generation model for specific needs.

Handling revenue, understanding sales techniques, developing communication skills, designing work documents – it doesn’t end here. For Akshay, the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas, and learn from individuals – the human factor – was immensely helpful. ‘I was able to interact with professionals from higher education industry bodies like CII, EPSI, HEF, AICTE, ASSOCHEM, and PAN IIT Alumni Foundation. In addition, could meet and converse with higher education professionals from Times group, Paytm, Microsoft, IBM, LinkedIn, SAS, Adobe, BenQ, Avaya Global Network, and much more.’

With focus and perseverance, Akshay was able to initiate sales on multiple fronts: from an advertisement in research reports and on ASMA community portal to sale of ASMA research reports to college libraries to sponsorships for the ASMA event.

‘Now I look forward to give my best to generate revenue till the event gets over. And, prepare for the next term!’

Innovative, pioneering, and future-focused, the ASMA project is supported by KIAMS, an acclaimed center of excellence in management education, research, training, and consultancy.
